Is spying by NSA ethical?

Both France and Germany demand an explanation from America for spying on Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande by America’s National Security Agency (NSA), the country’s most powerful and largest US Intelligence Organization. It works under the jurisdiction of the Department of Defence and Director of National Intelligence.

The country’s most shocking revelations about spying on the German Chancellor on calls made to the members of the French administration created furore not just among Germany and France, but across the whole world; and they are demanding an explanation from the US over the issue accusing the NSA of breaching the code of conduct.

The classified revelation was done by a former CIA contractor Edward Snowden. The NSA Director, James Clapper defended the NSA stating that it is their job and responsibility to keep a tab on their intentions. However this comment only led to more flak.

Worse still is that President Obama is embarrassed with the entire furore created, and claims he did not know about this. The NSA also denies that the President knew about the US spying on the German and French leader. But there are also reports saying the President not only knew about it, but also approved this spying. However being passive over the whole issue, he has still promised changes to the National Security Agency (NSA) working behavior.

The revelation has led to a lot of dispute between the countries and they are demanding an explanation for the same. The consequences are dire.

– Now the German and the French are driving the Americans into clearly stating and agreeing to new transatlantic rules on intelligence and security service behaviour.
– At an EU summit in Brussels, Francois Hollande also called for a new code of conduct to be agreed between the national intelligence services in EU, raising the question of whether Britain would opt to join in.
– The EU leaders and Merkel have pointed out that the international fight against terrorism was being jeopardised by the US’s out of control behaviour.
– This lack of trust can also go against the co-operation expected in the field of intelligence gathering
– The relation between the US and the Europe can be effected by such breaches. It could lead to hostility between the countries.
– The German government declared that a group of senior officials along with the domestic intelligence agencies would travel to US for talks in the White House and the NSA
– Both the French and Germans want to reduce the damage created by this furore and clarify these in the meeting and hence setting a deadline for the results by Dec, hoping after this the situation between the US and the Europe allies would ease out a little.
